Marines Mistakenly Sent Purple Heart Christmas Ornaments to Deceased | Fox News

WASHINGTON – The Marine Corps on Tuesday apologized for incorrectly mailing Purple Heart Christmas tree ornaments to around 1,150 deceased Marine corps and mariners.

The gold ornaments, by having an picture of the Purple Heart within the center, were a part of a bundle in the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment that incorporated instructions towards the deceased recipient in the regiment's commanding officer in addition to a flyer with details about an sports reconditioning program.

The packages were addressed towards the deceased troops.

The Corps stated it discovered the mistake when family people known as Monday evening.

"You will find no words to convey how very sorry we're for that hurt this type of mistake has triggered the groups of our fallen players," stated Col. John L. Mayer, the regiment's commanding officer. "There's no excuse why this happened."

A speaker for that regiment, Capt. Jill L. Wolf, stated within an interview that by Tuesday 35 families who received the packages had known as to indicate the mistake. She stated Mayer has started giving them a call to apologize. Letters of apology will be delivered to all groups of the deceased who have been incorporated within the mailing.

The tree ornaments were contributed by an unspecified charity and were supposed to visit living Marine corps that had received the Purple Heart since 9/11, in addition to mariners who have been wounded while mounted on or serving meant for Marine Corps models. Nearly 8,000 were mailed, as intended, to living readers.

Wolf stated this is actually the third year the ornaments happen to be mailed to Purple Heart readers. There have been no known mailing errors in '09 or 2010, she stated.
